Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation in NEET has become a contentious issue among medical aspirants and their family members. The reservation is meant to be applied to government seats, there is a 10% reservation of government seats for students from economically weaker families in the general category. The intention of the EWS reservation is to promote inclusivity and equal opportunity for all Indian students entering the medical field.

While the goal of the policy is to help deserving candidates, many aspirants still don’t have a full understanding of eligibility criteria, cutoff benefits, and the effect EWS reservation makes on NEET admission. Students preparing for MBBS and BDS degrees have the same question about the influence of EWS reservation, “Does EWS reservation lower the cutoff?” or “What is the actual number of the EWS seat?”

Recognizing the EWS quota is crucial when considering whether an aspirant would be using the quota for admission, and even by general category fun as a general category doesn’t pursue admission quota and there is some effect on seat reduction and competition in the unreserved category as well.

NEET 2025 EWS Cutoff: What You Need to Know
NEET EWS cutoff is the minimum marks a candidate need to get to qualify under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota. The National Testing Agency (NTA) publishes qualifying cutoff percentiles and score range each year alongside the NEET results.
For NEET 2025, the cutoff details for EWS candidates are as follows:
| Category | NEET 2025 Cutoff Percentile | NEET 2025 Cutoff Score |
|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | 50th | 686 – 144 |
| EWS – PwD | 45th | 143 – 127 |
Key Points to Note:
- EWS percentile cut-offs are the same as the General one (50th percentile). However students who apply under the EWS quota gain reservation benefits in table-allocation counselling.
- For EWS PwD candidates, they qualify under the 45th percentile with a lower cutoff score range.
- Score ranges will move each year depending on how many number of candidates took the test, the difficulty of exam, and seat availability.
- Getting only a cutoff score only qualifies you to join the counselling processing. To receive an MBBS seat under EWS quota, students will need to generally score above the minimum cutoff depending on which college or state quota they attend to.
EWS Cutoff Advantage & Reality
The implementation of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in NEET was seen as a significant development for students from financially weaker backgrounds in the general category. While it does open doors, lets first clarify how much of benefit it provides.
The Perceived Advantage
Candidates often think if they apply under EWS category their qualifying cut-off percentile in NEET will come down. Candidates expect EWS students will receive similar relaxed cut-off benefits as reserved categories like OBC, SC, and ST.
The Reality
- The qualifying cutoff percentile for EWS is the same as the General category (50th percentile). There is no reduction in minimum qualifying marks for EWS candidates.
- The real benefit comes during counselling, not during qualifying. EWS candidates have a separate pool of 10% reserved seats, increasing their odds of being assigned a medical seat. For example, a candidate with a slightly poorer score in the unpooled rank may not get a seat, but they might get a seat due to it being reserved under the EWS.
What This Means for Students
- You are still required to qualify NEET by obtaining minimum cutoff marks in the same manner as unreserved candidates.
- Once you qualify, EWS quota gives you additional options in counselling which provides wider availability for seats in government colleges and the All India Quota (AIQ) seats.
- The EWS students are also limited to a particular income/assets (strict limits) and the applicants within EWS will be competing against each other for seats, but competition can still be tough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the EWS reservation in NEET?
A. EWS reservation gives a 10% allocation of government MBBS/BDS seats for candidates in the General category, who fulfill some specific income and asset criteria. EWS reservation is allocated through both All India Quota (AIQ) and most state quota counseling’s.
Q. Who is eligible for the EWS quota in NEET 2025?
A. Candidates in the General / Unreserved categories along with their families whose total annual seeable income is below ₹8 lakh and have no large land/house/property holdings in accordance with government rules can apply for EWS reservations. A Valid EWS Certificate (Income & Asset certificate) issued by the competent authority is mandatory.
Q. Does EWS reservation lower the NEET qualifying cutoff marks?
A. The qualifying cutoff for EWS will the same percentile used for General (50th percentile) and no relaxation in qualifying marks, like OBC/SC/ST categories.
Q. If the cutoff is the same, what is the real benefit of EWS reservation?
A. The benefit occurs during the counselling procedure. There are 15% seats for EWS in medical colleges giving them a placement probability. If they miss the overall general category cutoff by a few marks they may still get a seat in the EWS quota.
Q. Is the EWS quota available in all medical colleges?
A. EWS reservation applies to all central government institutions, AIQ seats (15%), and most state government medical colleges. Unfortunately, some private colleges and deemed universities may not implement EWS uniformly across all MBBS seats. Students should always consult the state counselling prospectus if want information about allocation details for EWS seats.
Q. Do I need to apply separately for EWS quota during NEET counselling?
A. While filling the NEET counselling registration form, you must select the EWS category and upload a valid EWS certificate. If you don’t declare it, you will be considered under the General category only.
Q. How is competition in the EWS category compared to General?
A. The competition will still be high, as only General category students can apply under strict financial/asset requirements; however, because there is only a 10% reservation, your chances of getting a seat under EWS will be better than in the open General pool.
Q. Can I use both State Quota and AIQ under EWS?
A. You can apply for State Quota and All India Quota (AIQ) under EWS, as long as the state you are listed in has EWS reservation for its counselling.
